Germany Ready to Accept Guantanamo Prisoners

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

German Chancellor Angela Merkel prepared to accept that Guantanamo detainees had been released. Previously, Germany had refused the request of the United States (U.S.), the magazine Focus reported on Saturday (05/29/2010).
Media said Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière has sent the message at a meeting of officials of the Party leadership of Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union recently. U.S. recently has asked Germany to take three Guantanamo detainees.

Focus reported prisoners each a citizen of Syria, Palestine and Jordan. It is not clear how many prisoners would be acceptable in Germany.

In the area of Hamburg and Brandenburg, de Maizière and some local officials have been examining ways to facilitate the return of prisoners to a normal life, including helping them find jobs and housing. There is also concern about their psychological state after years of living in detention.

Some German officials opposed the reception area in the former Guantanamo detainees refused their own throughout the U.S. in its own territory, says the magazine.

Germany last year rejected the U.S. request to receive the two former Guantanamo detainees, Germany also had previously rejected the proposal to accept some of China’s Uighur prisoners.

U.S. President Barack Obama has promised to close the prison for terrorism suspects in the case in January last. But Obama failed to meet a deadline that is partly because of opposition in the U.S. Congress about the transfer of prisoners to U.S. territory.

Washington has asked the help of some allies to solve the problem of the prisoners who had been cleared of all charges but can not return them for fear they might be tortured in their home countries.

On Saturday, the Washington Post, citing government documents that have not been previously disclosed, reported that the majority of prisoners detained at the U.S. naval base in Cuba it is a low-level insurgents.

Only about 10 percent of the 240 people detained at Guantanamo as an official Obama office in January 2009 was “the leaders, spies or facilitators involved in the plan (attacks) against the United States”, the newspaper reported. In early May, 181 prisoners are still languishing in prison who opposed many of these parties.
