Earthquake at Andaman Islands
Saturday, June 19th, 2010Port Blair, A is the magnitude 5.9 earthquake on the Richter scale shook the sea near Andaman Islands, India, Saturday (19 / 6) morning.
According to data from the U.S. geological survey agencies (U.S. Geological Survey / USGS) and local officials, the quake did not trigger the release of a tsunami warning but the inhabitants fled in panic from the house with the vibration of shaking the houses of people in Diglipur Island, 340 kilometers north city of Port Blair. So far, no casualties dilaprokan.
“We were asleep, but felt the earthquake is strong enough and we ran out of the house,” said Ashok Yadav, a villager. “But first we could not move out of bed because of the earthquake was shaking so hard.”
Government officials said the buildings in a number of islands in the area was cracked. “There are also cracks in the streets of Diglipur. In fact, in every house and store there was property damage,” said Sudeep Saha, a local official, told Reuters.
According to the USGS, the earthquake was centered 180 kilometers north of Port Blair, at a depth of 27.2 kilometers.
Often occurs in the Andaman earthquake, a seismic area. A 7.5-scale earthquake struck berkuatan that area last Sunday, triggering a tsunami warning but later withdrawn. The islands were devastated by the tsunami in the Indian Ocean in 2004, which triggered large-scale earthquake which occurred at 9.15 off the coast of Sumatra.
